OpenAI announced that it will terminate its $1 million worth of AI credits for the Caltech Mathathon sponsorship.
The decision was made in response to criticisms voiced in an open letter by Fields Medal–winning mathematicians, who questioned the influence of AI and claimed that it could hinder the progress of mathematics.
Mathathon is a youth‑organized event where teams of hundred mathematicians attempt to solve real research problems over a 40‑hour competition. OpenAI and Anthropic originally planned to provide roughly $2 million in AI credits for participants, but OpenAI has now stepped back.
The Mathathon organizers said that the event will continue and are seeking support from other companies. The goal is responsible use of AI to expand human understanding of mathematics.
