AI Fever by 2035: Data Centers' Gas Consumption Equals Japan and Germany Combined

Data centers operating in the United States will consume 510 million cubic meters of natural gas per day by 2035, which BloombergNEF says is equivalent to the combined consumption of Japan and Germany. This reflects a significant energy load and potential environmental risk due to the AI fever.

Data centers operating in the United States will consume 510 million cubic meters of natural gas per day by 2035, which BloombergNEF says is equivalent to the combined consumption of Japan and Germany. According to the calculations, this is almost twice the amount that was included in the estimate from nine months earlier.

On-site powered data centers represent only a small portion of the growing demand. By the middle of the next decade, grid-connected data centers will generate an additional 425 million cubic meters of daily consumption in the energy sector.

Due to the intensity of the AI fever, Meta, Microsoft and Google are also planning gas‑based solutions to avoid the normal electric power grid. The increased consumption could raise electricity prices and have serious environmental impacts.
