Anthropic Creates a "Wet Lab" for Biological Research

Anthropic, the American AI developer, has opened a physical laboratory in San Francisco, overseen by its life sciences division. The facility aims to accelerate drug discovery and biological experiments while minimizing human intervention by combining AI systems with robots.

Anthropic has established a "wet lab" – a physical laboratory – in the San Francisco Bay area. Eric Kauderer‑Abrams, head of the company’s life sciences division, confirmed the news.

The company announced in July that it is also developing its own drugs. Anthropic’s goal is to find treatments for diseases that are not addressed by the traditional pharmaceutical industry. The laboratory is not used exclusively for drug discovery; the company has not shared further details.

According to Kauderer‑Abrams, the ultimate test of biological research remains real laboratory work. The company conducts certain experiments in its own facilities and in collaboration with external partners while planning to use its AI system named Claude to control robots.

Anthropic emphasizes human oversight for safety reasons. The company has previously warned that models could be used for malicious purposes, including the development of biological weapons.
