Building a Laser Mosquito Killer with Artificial Intelligence at Home

Stephen Cheng, an engineer, has developed a homemade AI-based system that tracks mosquitoes with a camera and eliminates them with a laser. The project demonstrates how computer vision and robotics can be applied to everyday problems.

Stephen Cheng created a technological solution for his home mosquito problem: an artificial intelligence–based device that automatically follows flying insects and destroys them with a laser. To train the system, Cheng built his own database using high‑zoom DSLR photographs of mosquitoes.

The model required significant computational power and could recognize mosquitoes in camera images while distinguishing them from other flying objects. When it identifies a mosquito, a precisely controllable platform mounts a laser that activates and reacts to the insect’s movement in real time.

For safety, Cheng also integrated a second camera that detects people or hazardous objects. If such an object is detected, the system automatically shuts off the laser. During testing, the machine eliminated all mosquitoes from his home within a single night.

The project currently operates as an engineering experiment but clearly illustrates how computer vision, robotics, and artificial intelligence can be used to solve everyday problems.
