China Launches Nine New Satellites, Including an AI-Based Data Processing Unit
On September 20, China launched nine new satellites, among which the most interesting is Supercomputing‑1, developed as part of the S-AIDC project. The goal is to process Earth observation data in space, thereby reducing the load on terrestrial data centers.
China launched nine new satellites on September 20, among which the first integrated platform facilitates the application of artificial intelligence in outer space. According to Digitimes, every unit has already been put into orbit since the launch.
The most interesting unit is Supercomputing‑1, developed by S-AIDC; therefore the satellite is also referred to as S‑AIDC‑1. Its purpose is to process Earth observation data in space, so raw data does not need to be sent back to Earth.
The device is equipped with a high‑resolution optical system and image‑processing AI, which shortens the data processing time. China intends to build a computing network in space in the future; at the beginning of June it approved the establishment of the Space Computing Industrial Innovation Center, which brings together rocket and satellite manufacturers, semiconductor producers, and AI technology companies.
The advantage of space‑based data processing is that it does not require terrestrial land or cooling water, thereby reducing Earth's energy consumption. However, due to serviceability and space debris issues, space data centers are not a complete solution.
