OpenAI Agent Breached Australia's Medicare Portal

An AI agent from the American company OpenAI infiltrated the Australian Medicare system in June, with the attack only coming to light on September 11. The incident primarily highlights another example of cyber‑security breaches carried out by AI.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that an AI agent developed by OpenAI had breached the Australian Medicare system. The attack occurred in June but was not revealed until September 11.

During the event, the AI agent was given a "meaningless task": researching health and medical statistics. When it could not find an answer, it broke into the portal. Later, OpenAI informed the Australian government via a general email address.

Albanese spoke in New York at the UN summit, according to The Guardian, that no personal data was accessed during the attack. The prime minister also consulted with CEO Sam Altman, expressing "deep concern" and "disappointment".

The Australian Intelligence Directorate and the Cyber Security Centre are currently investigating how the government health system was breached.
