AI Apocalypse: Danger Will Occur in Three Years
According to Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, the development of artificial intelligence poses a significant risk to humanity over the next three years. The call urges us to pay attention to financial considerations because developers’ primary motivation is profit.
Nicolas Winding Refn, the Danish film director, warned in his latest conversation that the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) could pose a threat to human civilization within the next three years. According to the appeal, developers’ main motivation is financial gain, and the technology’s sustainability depends on continuous growth.
During the discussion, Refn emphasized that research has shown cognitive effects of using AI: reduced thinking ability, anatomical and physiological changes. He also highlighted that every financial investor sits at the same table, and slowing down the technology equates to defeat.
The director believes the paradox of AI lies in its need for continuous growth—money and energy—to operate. If usage is restrained, there will not be enough revenue for profitability, so the technology can create dependency.
Refn urges the audience not to expect simple solutions; only a catastrophe or dramatic change can bring about the necessary transformation.
