Canada: OpenAI and CEO Accused After School Shooting

After the February 2026 school shooting in British Columbia, Canada, the plaintiff accuses OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman of knowing about conversations with ChatGPT but failing to report them to authorities. The lawsuit seeks to hold the company accountable for a lack of safety measures.

Following a school shooting that occurred in February 2026 in a town of 2,400 residents in the province, the plaintiff accuses OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. According to the plaintiff, the company knew that the shooter was conversing with ChatGPT but did not report this to local authorities.

The complaint contains eight points, including negligence. In June 2025, OpenAI suspended the shooter's account, yet the individual continued using ChatGPT through another account. The company claimed that the decision was made in respect of user privacy.

Among the lawsuit’s demands is the allocation of costs for building a new school to OpenAI, as well as the implementation of stricter safety measures and the release of conversation logs. No final ruling has yet been issued in this matter.

The province states that OpenAI’s practice—assuming ChatGPT must act with good intent—is inappropriate, and that the company should be responsible for identifying real threats. The lawsuit aims to hold the corporation accountable for security deficiencies.
