AI Safety Debated at New York City Council Hearing
The New York City Council questioned representatives of OpenAI, Google, Meta and Anthropic about AI risks. According to Fox News Clips, the hearing raised the possibility of external oversight and emergency shutdown switches, as well as the need for national regulation.
According to Fox News Clips, representatives of OpenAI, Google, Meta and Anthropic spoke about artificial intelligence safety at a New York City Council hearing. Elon Musk’s AI company did not respond to a request for comment and was therefore issued a subpoena. Jacob Coxon also testified.
The hearing raised the possibility of external safety reviews, introducing emergency shutdown switches and rewarding whistleblowers. Julie Menon said that, in the absence of federal regulation, the city also needed to act, while noting that reasonable rules supporting innovation were necessary.
Bridget Bean warned that local requirements could fragment the U.S. market and delay the introduction of safety technologies. She said a national framework would be desirable. Kevin Hassett, meanwhile, argued for safe development but cautioned against slowing U.S. companies in a way that would give China an advantage.
According to the report, participants also discussed corporate accountability and informing the public. Bridget Bean called it unacceptable for companies to develop AI without appropriate safety measures.
